More Makeup Stuff

02:04 Sep 29 2011
Times Read: 642

Makeup update. I sent back the avon stuff that I didn't like and traded it for some other items. The Smooth Minerals items seem to be made for me. They match my skin tone exactly, last a long time, and feel really nice. I got the liquid foundation and matching powder. You don't need very much of either, which is another plus. Nobody likes going through their day feeling like their makeup is gooing on their face.

The Clear Pore Thermal Mask is awesome. You put some on, it gets your face all nice and warm, and clears out your pores while you lay back and relax. I love this. I used to do masks more often, but lost track of the ones I liked best. This one is a keeper.

Now, if I could find something to get rid of my sciatica. I get the worst nerve pains shooting down the backs of my legs, and up into my butt..makes sleeping a challenge as nerve pain knows no time clock. I'm lucky if I get 4 hours sleep most nights. Argh.

Awesome! The less makeup you use, the longer it will last.

About the sciatica...have you seen a doctor about it? Or maybe see another for another option on how to deal with it?

*keeping fingers crossed*

Makeup Stuff

My search for a good (for me) makeup goes on. I recently bought several items from Avon, with high hopes. Nearly all of them went back. Herewith, the rundown:

MagiX essential face mattifier: promised to keep my skin matte. Product sat atop my skin like a huge oil slick. Definitely not matte.

MagiX face perfector: states "perfect the look of your skin with this colorless gel/powder". Again, it never got absorbed, just sat on my skin like a filmy layer. Felt very greasy.

Ideal flawless liquid makeup: definitely not ideal. The lightest color shade in the range was orangey and would not blend into my skin at all.

Ideal shade pressed powder blush: Quite a bit more brown than the photos would lead you to believe. Was wanting a rosier shade.

Ideal shade pressed powder foundation: a keeper. I got it in translucent. Very smooth and nice.

Ideal shade custom shade foundation lotion: a real keeper. Goes on a sort of non-color, blends well, looks good. Will not hold up in the warmest weather, but from now till next spring it will do nicely.

The best over the counter product I have found thus far, as far as foundation goes, is Revlon Colorstay Mineral Mousse. Very creamy, shade matches my skin almost exactly, stays matte a long time. The minerals seem to absorb shine, and don't rub off on my clothes. Love this!

Physician's Formula makes an outstanding finishing powder called Mineral Wear Matte Finishing veil. Makes my skin very soft and smooth. Doesn't turn orange during the day. Probably not good in the heat and humidity but for now is wonderful.

More updates as they occur.

I never use cream foundations all over. For me I apply a cream foundation to problem spots: pimples, dark spots, reddish areas etc. A little should go a long way.

Then powder foundation: Not too much, it's just meant to even out the skin tone not create a whole new one.

This is the only method that's worked for me, otherwise it just looks nasty on my skin.

Hoarders

01:56 Sep 20 2011
Times Read: 702

Spent a few hours yesterday watching Hoarders from A&E. It's like a car wreck..horrible, but you can't look away. I'd never seen anything like it in my life. Some of those people's houses, crammed full of stuff...wow.

It is a type of mental illness. Some people realized what they had and wanted help. Others totally denied everything. The most chilling part was seeing the young kids mimicing their parents, hoarding toys and stuff....and finding it impossible to let go of anything.

My ex-husband was a bit of a hoarder, but his hoarding was confined to books, not garbage. He just never got rid of his books. Before we got married, I told him he had to weed out his collection, put some in storage or whatnot, since we were moving into smaller quarters, and I had my things to mix with his. It took his two other brothers and myself to get things sorted out, he really didn't help much.

It amazed me, watching the series, that people wanted to touch everything that was being hauled out, even if they hadn't seen it or touched it in years. These people had to go through every bag, every single thing that was being sorted. I kept thinking, why don't they just send these people away and let the cleaning crews clean the houses? But the hoarders needed to learn some coping skills I suppose, on how to clear out their clutter and keep it from re-forming.

That series makes you want to go sort something, I tell you. I kept looking at my bookshelves while it was on. I had a huge purge of my books awhile back, and now my bookcase...my pride and joy, that takes up almost one whole wall of my front room...is nicely clean and tidily sorted now. The next big event is to sort my dvds, and get them into some kind of order. I tend to forget what all I have, so I need to get some sort of system going, alphabetical or something.

Hoarding is scary...

I love my books. I'm keeping my books. There is a place for all of them and everything is neat and tidy because I'm anal like that - lol!

On those rare occasions when I've read a book and hated it, I drop it off in the apt complex laundry room or leave it on a park bench...or donate it.

And there's a fine line between hoarding and OCD...lol

Blargh

I live about two blocks off the downtown area. This weekend they are having "Downtown Days", the highlight being this afternoon's annual mini grand prix. They close off the streets and let people drag race. You cannot imagine the noise, or the smell.

Every year, the business owners in the area complain that this event (which lasts all afternoon and into the evening) shuts down their businesses, due to the streets being closed, and the smell of burning rubber lasts for DAYS. And the burnout marks in the streets are pretty awful.

I just ran out to get something at the grocery store....and the smell of the burning rubber was ferocious. If I was out walking, I would have vomited before I got ten steps. I had to put my car windows up and run the air conditioning. It's horrible. And the wind direction is blowing it right into my building, so no sleeping with windows open tonight. Got home and found several tenants down in the lobby gagging from the stench coming into their windows.

Fuck sakes. Why does the city permit this year after year? Just so people can drive cars fast? Get up to Sugar River Raceway if that's your thing, indoor track, knock yourself out. But outside on a public street....arrgh. The smell. Bleagh.

I had my brush with fame the other day, only I didn't know it until today. A nice Englishman came into the cleaners to get his shirts cleaned, and I took his name and info and we chatted for a bit. His name rang some sort of bell but I figured he was affiliated some how with the college, we get all sorts of people from all over the world who either teach or attend school there.

Today he wound up on the front page of our paper. His name is Giles Foden and he wrote the book that was made into the movie "The Last King of Scotland" (book has the same title). He is visiting here thru the end of October to teach at the college. You can read all about him at the newspaper's website, www.beloitdailynews.com.

Now....if I can just convince him to take me back with him when he goes...heh heh.

Cable Upgrade!

I accidentally punched the wrong station number into my remote last night and....woo....I discovered I somehow have the upper tier of cable! There are all the movie channels and other premium goodies that I never could afford. Holy crap.

This actually happened one other time. I discovered I had all these channels that I wasn't supposed to have, and like a good citizen, I called my cable provider because, living in an apartment building, I figured they switched mine with someone else's who was supposed to have it. They thanked me for reporting the glitch, but never turned off the premium channels for me. I enjoyed the hell out of those for over a year, before some gremlin got in there and took away all my fun.

This time, I'm not going to report it. Now then, where's the TV guide?

Brat Ban

21:55 Sep 12 2011
Times Read: 786

Just got home and turned on the TV. Dr Phil's program is about kids throwing tantrums in public places, restaurants and so on, and what to do about it. There was just a heated discussion between a waiter, who had undoubtedly had his share of bratty kids to wait on, and a parent, who insists on her right to bring her kids out to nice restaurants. She told the waiter maybe he needed to re-think his career choice, since he obviously couldn't cope with kids anymore.

O.o LISTEN. I waited on more kids in my career as a waitress (and even now at my current job) than you can shake a stick at. It should NOT be the waitperson's responsibility to take care of a screaming child, if your kid acts up when you are out in public, take the kid out of the situation. I can't tell you how many times I've been serving people whose kids are screaming, throwing things, making a mess and upsetting other diners...and the parents sit there oblivious, doing absolutely nothing. Who wants to sit next to that on your night out?

Dr Phil had a restaurant owner on, who has banned children under 6 from his place. He says his business has increased dramatically since the kid ban, and people are very much in favor of this. They say how nice it is to go out and eat and not have screaming children in the dining room. If a parent brings in a child over 6, and they act up, the kid has to go if the parent can't control the kid and get them to quiet down.

Now, I know this is a hot-button issue. Parents demand the right to take their children out to eat with them. Okay, so before you go, maybe you should let your child know what is going to happen, how they are expected to behave and so on. Maybe have a couple dress rehearsals. Going out for the first time is a big thing for kids. They are either going to be behaved, or off the wall...I've never seen a happy medium.

I happened to be out with my boss, his wife and their (then) three year old. The kid was all over the damn place, and it made me so nervous I said right then I would never go out to eat with them again. The mother had a running dialogue with the kid that went like this: "Autumn, don't climb on that. Mommy said sit down. No, you can't touch that. Mommy said no. I said you can't get up on there. Sit down. Mommy said no."

ACK!!

A customer at another table finally leaned over and said "who is in charge here? You or that kid? If it's you, please take that child and teach it some manners, because you are spoiling other people's dinner here!"

My parents never went out a lot with me. They just weren't social people, plus they could eat cheaper at home, so why go out? I only remember getting dressed up to go out on a couple of occasions, and beforehand I was told exactly how to behave and what the consequences would be if I didn't behave. I minded very well, I must say. :P

Dunno what my point is, don't have one really, I just had to get some stuff off my chest.

Growing up we were damn well expected to not act like little shits at dinner time, regardless of where we were. There is a time to play and burn off energy and then there is a time where you need to just sit and chill out.

I honestly view this the same as smoking inside. Just because YOU want to smoke doesn't mean I have to be bothered by the second hand effects. Take it outside.

I like kids but I do not think it is fair for diners to have their peaceful night out ruined by screaming offspring.

If parents can't handle getting up from the table and carrying out their duties as parents then they need to stay home where the chaos can happen in private.

Yeah ... If a child cannot behave well when out ... the child does not go out until it CAN behave well.

My parents were that way with us kiddos, and when I have charge of other children and go out with them, that is damn sure the case. I've no fear to make a child very unhappy by sticking to my guns and flat LEAVING.

I think the ban is a bit harsh but I also think parents need to take control of the situation. What gets me is the parents that don't follow through. Give warnings after warnings and still do nothing. If your kid is upsetting other diners, you all need to take it outside.

Isis101

We have a thread in our coven forum that discusses this topic. Most of us agree that if the kids can't behave, they need to stay home.

JustinV

This falls under the 'once upon a time' people cared how they were perceived by others. But now, when reality tv has made ridiculous behaviour the norm, it DOES seem perfectly acceptable to have your kid run wild.

Movie Night

01:22 Sep 08 2011
Times Read: 815

Finally got around to watching one of the movies I'd gotten way back and intended to watch "one day." I kept thinking about it and finally dug it out the other night.

It's an old black and white Hammer film called Never Take Sweets From a Stranger. It's rarely seen anymore, I'd never seen it on TV at all prior to this, and had a hell of a time tracking it down on dvd. I'd heard it was hard to find due to the subject matter, and I found it on a Hammer suspense collection that had a couple other titles I'd wanted, so I bought it.

Phew. What a film. A family moves to a city where the father takes up the post of principal at the local school. The entire city is owned/run by a wealthy family. One day the principal's young daughter and her friend go visit the patriarch of the family who runs the town. The girls come home with a frightening tale...the old man made them take their clothes off and dance naked for him, and he rewarded them with candy.

I won't spoil it for you if you haven't seen it except to say that the actor Felix Alymer plays the creepiest old pedophile I have EVER seen anywhere. There is no blood, no violence, no nudity, but I have never been so moved by a film. It was truly horrifying. It just goes to show how children can get sucked into evil by people who seem quite harmless.

My parakeet, Buddy, knows a few words. Not as many as the other one I had, but he was outstanding. Anyway, I was telling Buddy yesterday that Morri's little parakeet Roger got out of his cage and flew away. The conversation went like this:

Me: Buddy, a little p (parakeet) got out and flew away.

Buddy: a p?

Me: yes, a little p. He went by-by.

Buddy: P go by?

Me: Yes he did. He went by-by.

Buddy: (sad voice) ohhhhh, p.

Later on, as I was covering his cage for the night, he said: P go bye?

Me: Yes, he went bye bye. Good night now.

Buddy: Night night. (pause) night, p.
